Verslag voorjaarsexcursie Openluchtmuseum Eynderhoof 9 april 2005 An account of our Spring outing to the Open Air Museum Eynderhoof. The specialty of the day were several crafts practised simultaneously, such as baking bread, clog making, basket weaving, glaziering, peat cutting, blacksmithing and (trestle) sawying. Highlights of the day were barrel stave making and wheel tyring.
Gezien in Eynderhoof: een gepopt dak This article shows a photo of a ‘torched roof’ in a barn in the Open Air Museum Eynderhoof. To prevent raining and snowing in, the joints between roof tiles laid on lath are filled with straw wisps (Dutch: dokken or poppen). This practice is nowadays a rarity only preserved in rural structures.
Ook in Eynderhoof: herdersschopjes Shows two ‘shepherd‘s scoops’. An article on these tools is to follow in one of our next issues.
Hulpgereedschappen (1); de reilat Starts a new series on auxiliary tools used in the building trade. This first article is concerned with checking for possible defects in boards such as crook, warp, twist and bow. Checking for such deficiencies can be done by means of a square and straight edges.
Een vergeten gebruik van het kruishout Jan Verhoeven, a retired cabinet maker and antique furniture restorer, describes how a marker gauge can be put to use as a cutting gauge for making inlaid banding in marquetry work. He explains how to produce different patterns of inlay, from single strips of veneer to complex patterns with three-dimensional trompe-l‘oeil effects in different coloured veneers.
De snoeibeitel Johan De Punt continues his contribution by discussing a nicely forged pruning chisel in the inventory of the museum of the local history association of Epe-Mere (Belgium).
De timmerkist (gedicht) Offers a poem in the vernacular of the Zaanstreek (north of Amsterdam) about a carpenter‘s toolchest.
Tanden en schrapen in de meubelmakerij Jan Verhoeven reflects on an earlier appearance (A&G nr. 28) of a curious toothing plane. Jan explains the practice of toothing and scraping wood surfaces in furniture making from his own experience. The riddle of the remarkable toothing plane is left for a next issue.
De tiendemaat Deals with the index calliper, (a clockmaker‘s tool to measure the thickness of movements). The one depicted is calibrated in tenths of a millimetre (hence tiendemaat), but earlier examples are calibrated in twelfths of a ligne (0,188 mm), the ligne again being a twelfth of a Paris inch (pouce) of 27,07 mm, hence the term douzième (see Charles F. Hummel‘s book With Hammer in Hand).
Werktuigen als offergaven Gerrit van der Heide‘s article is entitled Tools as Sacrifice. He discusses the practices of our Neolithic forbears to sacrifice implements, amongst them tools (and sometimes people!), to the gods, presumably to obtain their goodwill.
Gevelstenen: Metselaar in Ridderkerk Hans Rode continues his series on GEVELSTENEN (stone tablets in house fronts). This time it‘s the turn of a tablet in Ridderkerk near Rotterdam. The stone depicts mason‘s tools such as the brick axe, the trowel and the bricklayer‘s hammer.
