| Herdersschopjes Collectie Openluchtmuseum Arnhem Emile van Binnebeke |
Mr. Emile van Binneke has studied the collection of shepherd´s scoops in the well known Dutch Open Air Museum (Arnhem). The collection is relatively small and available literature limited. No firm conclusion on a relationship between the scoop ‘profile´ and the soil type. Distinctions in design are curved (spoon-like) or flat scoops, scoops at a right angle or as a straight extension to the handle, how the scoop is fixed to the handle and whether the scoop has a cutting edge (for tough roots) or a hook (for catching sheep). The shepherd´s scoop has been widely used in Europe but hardly in Great Britain. Old paintings revealed some interesting specifics on shepherd´s scoops. |
| Holle dakpannen Huub Mombers |
Mr. Huub Mombers briefly discusses the history of roofing tiles in the Netherlands. The well known ‘verbeterde holle pan´ (widely applied Dutch pantile) has its origin in the so-called ‘under and upper´ roofing tiles (end 15th century). This design was followed by the ´Quack pan´ which has a simple ogee-curved cross section. Later improvements added serrations that ‘secured´ the overlaps (against seepage of rain or snow). These refinements allowed to apply only one style (left overlapped) independent of the prevailing wind direction. Tiles with serrations are available since the modern mechanisation of production. |

Tools of gold- and silversmiths (and the like), part one. Mr. F.Ferro interviewed goldsmiths Jaap and Hansje Jorritsma-Ploeger about their, sometimes self made tools. |
| Overbrenging van krachten met platte drijfriemen Piet Bot |
Leather belts for the transmission of driving forces. In this article mr. Piet Bot refers to specific developments in the steam power era. Initially power, from stationery steam engines, was mainly applied for pumping operations such as for coalmines and wetlands (polders). In the early 19th century the application of steam power became more general; multiple machinery was driven by a system of ceiling located shafts, wheels, pulleys and leather belts. This transmission method continued until the first world war and was thereafter gradually replaced by rubber V-belt systems. |
| De trogschraper en de deegsteker Johan de Punt |
Mr. Johan De Punt from Mere in Belgium discusses utensils from the time that the baker´s job was laborious and fully done by hand. When handling dough the baker used two tools or a combination; the trough scraper (trogschraper) and a dough knife (deegsteker). |
| Japans Handgereedschap 1. Inleiding Cees Otte |
Japans handgereedschap (Japanese tools; an introduction, page 30) Cees Otte discusses in a series of articles the history of Western and Japanese carpenter and furniture maker tools. At first glance Japanese tools differ from Western tools. A closer look however reveals that Japanese tools have similarities with our tools from the 19th century. |
